Urban growth and welfare in twelve cities
How Mozambique's largest cities grew between 2016 and 2022, and how household consumption changed. Drag the slider on the map to compare the two years, and pick a city below.
How these maps were made
Built-up zones come from the Google Open Buildings 2.5D Temporal dataset. Each 100 m cell is classified as urban (more than 20 buildings), peri-urban (3–20) or rural in 2016 and in 2022. Comparing the two years gives four zone types: old and new urban, and old and new peri-urban.
Consumption comes from random forest models trained on the IOF 2015 and IOF 2022 household surveys, with building, night-time light, vegetation and road predictors. We predicted every cell separately for each year. The 2015 values are in 2022 prices, assuming 81% inflation. The size of the decline depends on that assumption, so treat it as indicative.
Changes are building-weighted averages over a whole city or zone. Single cells are too noisy to compare across the two models.
